Can Picafort is the main tourist resort in the municipality of Santa Margalida and one of the liveliest destinations in the Bay of Alcúdia. Its long sandy beach, seafront promenade, wide range of restaurants, shops and family-friendly atmosphere make it an ideal place to enjoy the sea in comfort throughout the year.

Located in a privileged setting in the north of Mallorca, Can Picafort combines the lively atmosphere of a coastal destination with easy access to natural and cultural heritage sites of great significance, such as Son Real, Son Bauló and s’Albufera de Mallorca. It is the perfect destination to relax, take leisurely walks, enjoy sports, discover local culture and experience the Bay of Alcúdia at your own pace.

A place born by the sea

A place born by the sea

The history of Can Picafort dates back to the late 19th century, when the landscape was very different from what it is today. The area now occupied by the town was once part of the Son Bauló and Santa Eulària estates, and for a long time there were only a few fishermen’s huts. Among them were those belonging to Llorenç Dalmau “Barret” and Jeroni Fuster “Picafort”, the latter giving his name to the entire area.

In the late 19th century, Joan Garau, a doctor from Santa Margalida, purchased the property where Picafort’s hut stood and built one of the first summer houses. From then on, other families from Santa Margalida and neighbouring villages began to settle in the area, attracted by the sea, the tranquillity and the beauty of the bay.

From summer colony to tourist destination

From summer colony to tourist destination

The first steps in Can Picafort’s urban development took place between 1908 and 1909, when Bartomeu Cardell, owner of Son Bauló, began dividing coastal land into plots. From that moment onwards, the settlement developed into a summer holiday community for families from Santa Margalida, Muro, sa Pobla, Inca and other nearby towns.

Over the following decades, Can Picafort grew slowly, retaining its traditional fishing village atmosphere and family-friendly character. The first notable hotel was Hotel Alomar, which opened for the 1934 season and marked the beginning of a new era linked to tourism.

The major transformation came in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when Can Picafort experienced a significant boom in tourism and hotel development. New establishments were built, infrastructure was improved, and the former summer holiday community became one of the leading tourist destinations in the north of Mallorca.

Today, Can Picafort is a welcoming, accessible Mediterranean destination, offering a wide range of experiences centred around the sea, culture, gastronomy, sport and nature.

Its urban beach, with fine sand and calm waters, is one of the municipality’s main attractions. But Can Picafort offers much more than sun and sand: it is also home to street art, outdoor sculptures, military heritage, a weekly market, sporting activities, walking and cycling routes, local festivals and a gateway to unique natural landscapes.

From here, you can easily reach Son Bauló, set off on a walk towards Son Real, discover the murals of Saladina Fest, stroll along the seafront promenade or enjoy dinner by the sea.

The name Can Picafort comes from Jeroni Fuster, who was known by the nickname “Picafort”. His former fishermen’s hut gave its name to the entire area, which over time would grow from a small seaside settlement into the municipality’s main tourist resort.
