Son Serra de Marina is the most peaceful coastal village in the municipality of Santa Margalida. Overlooking the Bay of Alcúdia and surrounded by nature, it retains a relaxed, residential character and a strong connection to the sea.
Its long beach, dune landscape, open horizon and uncrowded atmosphere make Son Serra de Marina an ideal destination for those seeking peace, authenticity, seaside walks and a direct connection with the municipality’s most unspoilt coastline.
Unlike other, busier tourist areas, Son Serra retains its human scale and distinctive pace of life. Here, the sea, the wind, the sand and the light take centre stage. It is the perfect place to swim, walk, enjoy water sports, admire the bay and experience a freer, more serene side of Mallorca.
The origins of Son Serra de Marina are linked to the historic estate of Son Serra, one of the largest traditional rural properties in the municipality of Santa Margalida. This estate, which once covered 837 hectares, occupied land that, during the Islamic period, belonged to the rural settlement of Robaria. From the 14th century onwards, it came into the hands of the Serra de Marina family, who gave the estate its name and maintained strong ties with this territory for centuries.
The present-day settlement of Son Serra de Marina is much more recent. Its development began in the mid-20th century on the coastal land of the former estate. The project was promoted by Joan Massanet Moragues, approved in 1953, and construction of the first homes began around 1954.
The original settlement, also known as Colònia Verge del Carme or Son Serra Vella, developed as a strip running parallel to the sea, with long streets and the character of a summer holiday community. Later, in 1966, the development of Serranova was launched, with expansion extending further inland.
Son Serra de Marina has preserved a distinctive identity within the Bay of Alcúdia. The absence of hotels and its residential character have helped maintain a peaceful, natural and uncrowded atmosphere.
Today, it remains a highly appreciated destination among residents and visitors seeking nature, tranquillity, open spaces and a more authentic seaside experience. Its beach still retains the charm of the wide, unspoilt sandy stretches that once characterised much of Mallorca’s coastline.
One of the main attractions of Son Serra de Marina is its close connection with the sea and water sports.
The wind, waves and expansive coastline have made this coastal village a popular destination for enthusiasts of surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing and other sea-related activities.
It is an ideal place for active travellers, sports enthusiasts and visitors who want to experience the coast in a more dynamic way, while always respecting the natural environment.
The first contracts for the sale of plots in Son Serra de Marina included very strict rules of moral conduct. One of the most unusual prohibited men and women from bathing together.
