Tips for renting bicycles in Can Picafort and enjoying the route

Renting a bike in Can Picafort can be one of the best decisions you make during your trip, provided you give it a little thought. Much of the area is flat, the landscape combines coastline, towns and natural spaces, and there are routes that allow you to escape the usual routine of beach days and leisurely strolls.

However, not every bike is suitable for every purpose, and not every route is equally advisable depending on the time of year, your fitness level or the type of terrain you want to explore.

The first piece of advice is very simple: before renting a bike, think about how you will actually use it. If you only want to get around Can Picafort, ride to the seafront promenade, visit Son Bauló or make short journeys, a city bike or hybrid bike may be enough. If you want to explore trails with unpaved sections or venture into areas such as Son Real, a more robust bike may be a better choice. And if you are planning to cover longer distances on the road towards Alcúdia, Santa Margalida or other parts of northern Mallorca, it is worth asking for a road bike or a sportier option.

Electric bikes are a very practical alternative for many visitors. You still have to pedal, but the assistance allows you to extend your ride without becoming exhausted, especially in hot weather or if you are not used to cycling long distances. They are also useful for couples or groups with different fitness levels, as they make it easier for everyone to maintain a similar pace. However, it is important to check the battery range, ask how the pedal assistance works and make sure you allow enough time to return the bike.

Before setting off, take five minutes to check your bike. It may seem like a waste of time, but it can prevent many problems. Make sure the brakes respond properly, the gears work smoothly, the saddle is at the correct height and the tyres are properly inflated. Ask for a helmet, lights if you expect to cycle late in the day, and a lock if you plan to make stops along the way. It is also important to clarify the rental conditions: return times, deposit requirements, potential damage charges, assistance in case of a breakdown and exactly what is included in the price.

Can Picafort has the advantage of being ideally located for a wide variety of cycling routes. An easy ride can take you towards Son Bauló and continue, with care, through the Son Real area, always staying on designated paths and respecting pedestrians. Longer road cycling routes are also an option, particularly outside the hottest and busiest hours of the day. The Bay of Alcúdia and the inland countryside of Santa Margalida offer beautiful scenery for cycling, with open landscapes, dry-farmed fields and stretches where Mallorca’s distinctive light makes the experience even more enjoyable.

However, it is important to be realistic. In summer, setting off on a bike ride at midday is rarely a good idea, especially if you are not used to the heat. It is much better to start early, carry water, sunscreen and a light snack, and plan a route that allows you to return without rushing. You should also take the wind into account. On the northern coast, a stretch that seems easy on the outward journey can become much more demanding on the way back if the wind changes direction or blows against you.

Another important consideration is respect for the natural environment. Son Real, the dune areas and the paths near the coastline are sensitive natural spaces. Cycling offers a sustainable way to explore them, but only when done responsibly. You should never ride off designated paths, enter areas of vegetation or disturb people walking nearby. In some places, particularly where there is sand or a large number of pedestrians, the best option is to get off your bike and continue on foot. Enjoying a natural environment also means respecting its boundaries.

Renting a bike in Can Picafort should not be a last-minute decision made without any thought. With a little planning, it can become one of the best ways to discover the municipality. It allows you to explore more of the landscape, venture beyond the town centre, discover the connection between the coast and the countryside, and experience the bay at a different pace. You do not need to embark on a challenging cycling adventure to enjoy it. Sometimes, a short, well-chosen route taken at a leisurely pace is enough to return with the feeling that you have discovered a different side of Can Picafort.
