Niu d’ametrelladores de Son Real

The Son Real machine-gun nest is part of the Tamarit Line, a system of coastal fortifications built in Mallorca starting during the Civil War and within the subsequent context of the Second World War.

These structures, popularly known as bunkers, were built by the Francoist forces with the aim of defending coastal areas against possible attacks or landings from the sea. Due to its size and its beaches suitable for amphibious operations, the Bay of Alcúdia was considered a strategic area.

The machine-gun nests were positioned close to the sea and oriented towards potential landing and disembarkation areas. Most of the surviving examples between Can Picafort and Son Serra de Marina have a simple and functional structure, designed to house machine guns and provide visual control over the coastline.

Over time, these fortifications lost their military function and were gradually abandoned.

The Niu de metralladores de Son Real is located at the beginning of the Finca de Son Real when approaching from Son Serra de Marina. Its location offers the opportunity to discover this heritage feature within one of the municipality’s most natural stretches of coastline, where military heritage, unspoilt landscapes, the sea and the heritage of Son Real coexist in the same setting.
