Blue Flag

Our beaches, synonymous with quality

The Blue Flag is an international award granted annually by the Foundation for Environmental Education. This award is a symbol of environmental quality, services and safety. All our urban beaches hold this distinction. The programme is coordinated at four levels: local, regional, national and international. In this way, the Blue Flag award promotes, develops and supports initiatives whose ultimate goal is the sustainable environmental management of our municipality’s coastline. A beach’s Blue Flag therefore recognises and encourages local councils’ efforts to ensure that their beaches meet specific regulatory requirements (coastal legislation, the Bathing Water Directive, the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive, etc.), as well as standards for cleanliness, safety, information and environmental management.

The beaches of Can Picafort, Son Bauló and Son Serra de Marina have received the Blue Flag award year after year. This distinction makes Santa Margarida one of the municipalities with the most Blue Flags in the Balearic Islands. Improvements to bathing areas, including access and facilities, together with the quality of our waters and our lifeguard service, have been key to achieving this recognition.

In addition to this award, our municipality holds another distinction: the Blue Trail designation for the sa Marina de Son Real coastal path. The Blue Trail connects the beaches of Son Bauló and Son Serra de Marina, both of which hold the Blue Flag award. This path highlights natural areas and sites of cultural and heritage interest.

Along the sa Marina de Son Real path, which stretches for approximately 6 km, visitors can discover archaeological sites, dune systems, former quarries, pine woods and navigation alignment towers, among other heritage features.
