Oratory of Son Serra de Marina

The Oratory of Son Serra de Marina, also known as the Chapel of Saint John the Baptist, is one of the most notable features of the religious heritage of this coastal settlement.

The chapel was blessed in 1912 and displays clear Neo-Romanesque inspiration. Notable features of the façade include the round-arched portal with archivolts, the central rose window, and the crowning section, which is adorned with Lombard bands and a wayside cross.

On the exterior of the apse end, the semicircular apse is clearly visible; the bell tower rises beside it, serving as one of the elements that reinforce the building’s presence in the urban landscape of Son Serra de Marina.

During the 1930s, the chapel was designated a *vicaria in capite* (an independent curacy) dedicated to the Heart of Jesus. It was subordinate to the parish of Santa Margalida, and religious services were held there until 1969.

This oratory offers insight into the religious history of Son Serra de Marina and its relationship with the parish of Santa Margalida, as well as the evolution of this small seaside settlement during the 20th century.
