Procession of the Beata

The Procession of the Beata is the most emblematic event of the Festes de la Beata in Santa Margalida, and it is always held on the first Sunday of September.

During these days, the streets of the town are filled with the scent of myrtle, and the sound of the *dimonis’* (demons’) bells echoes everywhere, creating a unique atmosphere that heralds one of the most anticipated moments of the year.

The procession fills the town with music, color, devotion, and public participation, featuring floats, men and women in traditional peasant attire, children, marching bands, and *dimonis*. The festival pays homage to Santa Catalina Tomàs—popularly known as “La Beata”—a figure deeply cherished within Mallorcan religious life and folk culture.

One of the most distinctive moments occurs when the *dimonis* attempt to seize the jars carried by participants dressed as peasants, smashing them at the feet of La Beata. This scene, rich in visual impact and symbolism, stands as one of the most iconic images of the festival.

The Procession of La Beata is far more than a religious event; it is a living expression of the town’s identity—a celebration that weaves together tradition, emotion, collective memory, and the very essence of village life.
