Smart tourist destination

Since 2021, Santa Margalida-Can Picafort has been part of the Smart Tourism Destinations Network, following an assessment by SEGITTUR. This recognition reflects the municipality’s commitment to a more sustainable, innovative and accessible tourism model focused on improving the experience of those who visit us.

Being a Smart Tourism Destination means moving towards a more modern and efficient approach to tourism management that takes into account the local area, residents, businesses and visitors. This model helps to better protect natural spaces, improve services, facilitate access to information and make every stay more comfortable, responsible and rewarding.

This process is based on five key pillars: governance, innovation, technology, sustainability and accessibility. Following the assessment, the municipality has an Action Plan that sets out the steps needed to continue transforming Can Picafort, Son Serra de Marina and Santa Margalida into a destination ready to meet the challenges of the future.

The award of this distinction is the result of successfully completing an assessment of more than 400 indicators related to the five pillars of SEGITTUR’s Smart Tourism Destination (DTI) model.

Of the areas assessed, Sustainability is where our municipality achieved the highest level of compliance, at 75.7%. This is followed by Governance at 59.5%, Accessibility at 43%, Technology at 34% and Innovation at 32%.

The assessment has provided the municipality with an Action Plan outlining strategic priorities to help it become a Smart Tourism Destination. Santa Margalida will therefore follow SEGITTUR’s DTI methodology to continue its tourism transformation. The distinction certifies compliance with the requirements established by the methodology and recognises the municipality’s efforts and commitment to quality and continuous improvement.

sustainability

In terms of sustainability, the highest-scoring pillar, Santa Margalida has focused on safeguarding its cultural, artistic and natural heritage, protecting the environment and promoting the destination’s economic and social sustainability. Regarding governance, the creation of the Tourism Advisory Council is particularly noteworthy. According to SEGITTUR, this represents an excellent tourism policy based on quality and public-private collaboration.

In terms of technology, Santa Margalida has made a strong commitment to the extensive use of technology in governance. The municipality is also placing considerable emphasis on innovation as a driving force for addressing new challenges in tourism and the wider context. Finally, in the area of accessibility, Santa Margalida Town Council is committed to inclusive tourism. The aim is to ensure that our municipality and its tourist attractions can be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of their physical or sensory abilities.

Among the recommendations made to the Town Council, one of the most significant is the establishment of a Smart Office to coordinate the management and planning of the municipality’s entire transformation process towards the Smart Tourism Destination (DTI) model.
