The Son Serra de Marina estate is one of the municipality's most notable examples of rural civil architecture. The buildings were owned by the Serra de Marina family from the 14th to the 19th century.
The complex consists of several buildings arranged around a large courtyard. When the old road passed through this area, its layout gave it an appearance similar to a village square.
At Son Serra de Marina, many of the characteristic elements of Mallorca’s large traditional estates can be identified: the landowners’ house, the farm workers’ quarters, the mill, the sheepfolds and other spaces associated with agricultural and livestock activities. During the 20th century, the estate also housed a small school for people living in the surrounding area.
Among its most notable features are the two defensive towers located at either end of the landowners’ house. The oldest is the lower tower, with a bell gable, documented as early as the mid-16th century, although it may have an earlier origin. The other, taller tower may date from the 19th or 20th century.
This complex offers an insight into the historical importance of the traditional estates within the rural landscape of Santa Margalida and their role as centres of life, work, defence and territorial organisation.
