Graded school

Opposite the Plaça de s’Abeurador stands the Escola Graduada, popularly known as “s’Escola vella”, designed by the architect Guillem Forteza and built between 1924 and 1927. Classical in origin with Noucentista influences, the Escola Graduada is one of the most distinctive and emblematic buildings in the Vila. Its façades feature a dynamic composition, with numerous windows that were essential for lighting the classrooms and are decorated with rusticated surrounds. The complex is surrounded by a small landscaped area and includes the traditional rear courtyard.

It served as a school until 2003, although during the Spanish Civil War it was used to imprison opponents of General Franco’s coup d’état. Today, it houses the Casal de Cultura Joan Mascaró i Forners, which includes a municipal library, the municipal historical archive, exhibition rooms and a newly built auditorium with a capacity of 250 people.
