Plaça de la Vila

We are at the heart of social life in the town of Santa Margalida, at the end of the street that shares its name with the square. Many of the town’s bars are located here, as well as the market and most of the events on the local festive calendar.

The main square was built at the end of the 19th century. Previously, it formed part of the rectory grounds, known as “es clos de sa Rectoria”, as the entire area was enclosed by a wall. This land was sold at the beginning of the century. Until the 1980s, there was a bandstand in the centre of the square where the local band performed every Sunday and especially on feast days.

Next to the square is a small garden containing a statue of the Beata, created by the sculptor Remigia Caubet in 1974. In 2009, the Town Council renovated this area and installed an iron jar divided into different sections to serve as planters. In 1999, local residents planted an olive tree in a patch of soil beside the square. Its trunk suggests that it is a very old tree. It stands at the edge of the slope, in a place that, as Vicar Rubí wrote, is like an open window overlooking Puig Major and the mountains where the tree may have originated.

The town square is a popular meeting place for many young people. Two weekly markets are also held here, one on Saturday and another on Tuesday. It is an ideal place to meet friends or enjoy breakfast at one of the nearby bars.
