Sèquia reial

The Síquia Reial is a hydraulic system of Islamic origin that drains excess water from the farmland to the south-east of Santa Margalida. The population of this area was predominantly engaged in agriculture and would have combined cereal crops with vegetable gardens, as shown by the numerous remains of qanats or “fonts de mina” found in the area.

It was within this context that the Síquia Reial and its associated elements were built as a hydraulic system to drain excess water from the cultivated plots towards the Torrent de Son Bauló and, from there, into the sea. Along the course of the Síquia Reial, there are a total of 42 wells and 10 bridges that allow the channel to be crossed throughout its route until it connects with the natural basin of the Torrent de Son Bauló.
