Civil architecture

The civil architecture of Santa Margalida helps us understand how the municipality has been organized over the centuries:

Rural life, the importance of large estates, the evolution of the village, wealthy families, educational institutions and the buildings that have shaped local history.

This heritage includes rural estates, manor houses, historic buildings and structures associated with everyday life. They are more than just old buildings: they bear witness to a way of living, working and interacting with the surrounding landscape.

For centuries, the traditional rural estates, known as possessions, were major centres of agriculture and livestock farming. Land, crops, livestock, storage facilities and agricultural activities were managed from these estates. Some still preserve manor houses, central courtyards, chapels, wine cellars, agricultural outbuildings and architectural features of great interest.

Within the town, the stately homes and civic buildings reveal another side of the municipality: urban life, the influence of certain families, education, culture, and the social evolution of Santa Margalida.

Today, many of these spaces have taken on new functions. Some have been converted into rural hotels, restaurants, lodgings, event venues, or cultural facilities. Others remain as private properties or can only be viewed from the outside. Yet, all of them are part of the municipality’s historical landscape.
