Military architecture

The military architecture of Santa Margalida helps us discover a little-known part of the municipality’s recent history:

The strategic role played by the coast of Can Picafort and Son Real during the 20th century.

This heritage consists of bunkers, machine-gun nests, and alignment towers—structures built to monitor, defend, and control the Bay of Alcúdia within a context shaped by the Civil War, the post-war period, and naval military maneuvers.

The machine-gun emplacements, commonly known as bunkers, formed part of the Línia de Tamarit, a system of coastal fortifications designed to defend against potential attacks or landings from the sea.

The alignment towers, on the other hand, served a different purpose. They acted as visual reference points, allowing submarines to calculate their position during naval firing manoeuvres and mine-laying exercises. Their distinctive red-and-white appearance has become one of the most recognisable sights in Can Picafort.

Today, these structures no longer serve any military purpose, but they remain part of the coastline’s historical and cultural heritage. Some can be seen while walking through Can Picafort and Son Real, blending into the coastal landscape of sea, dunes, promenades and paths.
