Ethnological heritage

The ethnological heritage of Santa Margalida helps us understand how past generations lived, worked, and related to the territory.

It is a heritage comprising structures, paths, trades, traditional techniques, and elements linked to the municipality’s rural and maritime life.

This heritage includes mills, livestock trails, piers, boat slips, quarries—including *marès* (sandstone) quarries—, interpretation centers, and other features that illustrate the traditional ways of utilizing the land, stone, wind, and sea.

One of the most notable sites is the *marès* (sandstone) quarries of Son Real, located in a coastal setting of great scenic value. These ancient quarries extended right to the water’s edge, and a portion of them is now submerged. Even today, they offer a glimpse into traditional extraction techniques, alongside the remains of structures—such as small huts—that lend the site significant ethnological value.

Also part of this narrative are the windmills, dry-stone paths, traditional piers, and the Son Real Interpretation Centre, which provides insight into what rural life was like on the large estates (*possessions*) of Mallorca.
